Manuscript de Illumination

Here is my illuminated manuscript!
The reason I am drawn to these manuscripts is because of the strong storytelling elements that are found within them. I tried to duplicate this aspect by creating a visual depiction of the confusion that comes with the process of moving away from home.

  1. Hey Jessie,

I really enjoyed learning about your manuscript in class because I thought the idea and the story behind it was very creative while also being descriptive of who you are. The borders reminded me of a page in the Book of Durrow. It has the same feel since it is also an even border encompassing the page.

The use of red, green, blue, and gold was a nice touch of inspiration from the Book of Kells as well. I wished the center images had more colors though.

Check out both pics here: http://t771unit3.pbworks.com/w/page/6766567/Chapter%209%20-%20Northern%20European%20Art%20of%20the%20Early%20Middle%20Ages

The pics are all the way at the bottom!

    Overall, nice work!

  2. Jessie,
Your border looked beautiful. It was very eye catching and intricate. It reminded me a lot of the Book of Durrow where it seemed as if there was just as much or more influence on the border as the image (like this: http://mattstone.blogs.com/photos/christian_art_celtic/bookofdurrowmatthewsymbol.jpg). Your text is also looks great. The extended lines make it look like some of the examples we saw in class.

  3. I love the boarder to yours! It is so intricate and looks like it took a lot of work! I also love the colors of it, they really remind me of some of the imagery of the Book of Kells that we saw in class, but the style of the boarders really reminded me of the Book of Durrow. I also really enjoy the uniqueness of the text that you used! It's so you! Great work!

  4. Jessie - I LOVE the story you presented in class. this piece was very well thought through! I think the renderings of the people and buildings are very reminiscent of the book of Kells. I would have loved to see the carpet page with a lot more color... but at the same time, I enjoy the balance between the text page and the carpet page with the color outlining the black and white. The perspective is also very similar to the works we have covered in class. Good work, Jesse, I enjoy it very much!

  5. I know it may have been mentioned once or twice, but awesome border! Diggin' the floral patterns!
The figures in your image remind me of many figures from the era with lack of perspective. Very much like the Beatus manuscripts. The use of gold, blue, red, and green are very celtic. The text looks good, the overall close line space and kerning, as well as the over-decoration of the text, are very illumination-like qualities.

Generally, it looks very much like this leaf from the Winchester Bible. http://www.themorgan.org/collections/images/medren/msm619v_2.jpg

  6. The border is awesome! I also like the drawing on your carpet page. The colors that you used in your border remind me of this page.
